What Is Family Law?\r\n\r\nFamily law is a specific branch of law that focuses specifically on matters concerning familial relationships and the like. As a skilled and experienced family law attorney with over 26 years of experience, John A. Bledsoe has the skills that you need to help you win your family law case!\r\n\r\nAs a highly specialized branch of law, lawyers who provide family law services cover a number of different scenarios in their work. All of these situations and cases will center around some aspect of family and relationships and can include—although are not limited to—a number of the following most common case types.\r\nWhat Are Family Law Cases?\r\nThere are a number of different types of legal cases that can be categorized under the branch of family law. However, it can sometimes be a little unclear as to which cases are strictly family law cases and which are of another category, due to the often overlinking nature of family law with other areas of specialization.\r\nDivorce\r\nDivorce proceedings are generally defined as being a part of family law and so are handled by family law attorneys. During divorce cases, each partner in a relationship will have their own representative attorney whose primary responsibility is to stand up for their client’s rights. Divorce attorneys work to ensure that each partner receives a fair share of any assets that were previously owned by both parties. Divorce attorneys may often be involved in the negotiation process for child custody and visitation rights.\r\nChild Custody\r\nWhile divorce attorneys may be involved in the basic planning of child custody arrangements, specialist child custody attorneys are required for the majority of the child custody process. During these court proceedings, an attorney will work to decide on an arrangement that will allow for both parents in a relationship to have fair custodial rights over a child. Generally speaking, these cases will detail visitation rights and other such circumstances.\r\nAdoption\r\nWhen it comes to adopting or fostering a child, an attorney who specializes in adoption will be needed. It is the role of these attorneys to help adoptive parents make their case for adopting a child, while also supporting the aforementioned individual or couple throughout the process.\r\nPaternity\r\nGenerally speaking, a paternity case will be created by the mother of a child whose father has, for a variety of reasons, otherwise been absent from the child’s life. These such cases are most commonly opened in order for the mother to get child support payments from the father, in circumstances where he has not been meeting his duties. In some cases, paternity cases may also be opened by a father looking to achieve greater visitation rights and the like with the child in question. These cases are usually based upon the results of a DNA test either way to prove the parentage of the child in question.
