What Is Family Law?\r\n\r\nFamily law is a specific branch of law that focuses specifically on matters concerning familial relationships and the like. During divorce cases, each partner in a relationship will have their own representative attorney whose primary responsibility is to stand up for their client’s rights. Divorce attorneys work to ensure that each partner receives a fair share of any assets that were previously owned by both parties. Divorce attorneys may often be involved in the negotiation process for child custody and visitation rights.\r\nChild Custody\r\nWhile divorce attorneys may be involved in the basic planning of child custody arrangements, specialist child custody attorneys are required for the majority of the child custody process. During these court proceedings, an attorney will work to decide on an arrangement that will allow for both parents in a relationship to have fair custodial rights over a child. Generally speaking, these cases will detail visitation rights and other such circumstances.\r\nAdoption\r\nWhen it comes to adopting or fostering a child, an attorney who specializes in adoption will be needed. It is the role of these attorneys to help adoptive parents make their case for adopting a child, while also supporting the aforementioned individual or couple throughout the process.\r\nPaternity\r\nGenerally speaking, a paternity case will be created by the mother of a child whose father has, for a variety of reasons, otherwise been absent from the child’s life. These such cases are most commonly opened in order for the mother to get child support payments from the father, in circumstances where he has not been meeting his duties. In some cases, paternity cases may also be opened by a father looking to achieve greater visitation rights and the like with the child in question. These cases are usually based upon the results of a DNA test either way to prove the parentage of the child in question.
