The situation is all too familiar: your best mate is about to get married, or move to a far away town, or resign from drinking for the rest of his days, and now you, always the bad influence, must invest in a great send off: the ultimate drinking gift. Your reputation is at stake: these drink gifts must be memorable– as much as anything drink-related can be accurately remembered. There is a caveat, of course. How much to spend? Fortunately, there’s no need for a sour economy or poor bank statement to ruin your good time.\r\n\r\nThere are few basic rules you can use to find the right drinking gifts. One question to ask yourself is how much you typically spend when you and your mate go out for a night of drinking? This will establish the base-mark for how much a drinking a gift should cost. You are always welcome to be generous and exceed this number, but falling well below it might be perceived as stingy. Another important question to ask yourself: how important is the occasion? If your buddy is getting married, you will probably want to spend more than if it’s just another birthday. After all, you might have fewer opportunities to get pissed together in the future.\r\n\r\nSometimes, the best drink gifts for men is the simplest. After a particularly rough breakup with a girlfriend (that the author doesn’t want to get into here!) a good friend of mine bought me a sparkly new pint glass set and offered to take me to my favorite bar. The best part was when we arrived, this saint of a friend offered to pay not only for my drinks, but the drinks of any girl I could muster the nerve to approach. How did it work out? This brings us to the last rule for buying a drinking gift: it’s the thought that counts most of all.
