Marinakis was born in 1967 in Piraeus, Greece, to a reputable family. MiltiadisMarinakis, Evangelos’ father, owned a shipping company, financially supported local football club Olympiacos, and was a member of the National Parliament. Evangelos attended school in Greece but acquired his master’s degree in International Relations in the United Kingdom.\r\nMarinakis took over Capital Maritime Corp from his father and turned it into the leading company in the shipping industry with a fleet of over 70 ships and about 9 million tons (dwt) of tonnage. The businessman invested across all sectors, including dry bulk, container, and tanker. Various maritime publications pronounced him as one of the most influential people in the industry. Lloyd’s List awarded him the Greek Shipping Personality of the Year award in 2017. \r\nIn 2010, he decided to become the majority owner of the Olympiacos football club from his hometown Piraeus. Olympiacos had great success under his helm and won seven consecutive Greek League Championships from 2010/11 to 2016/17.
