Unemployment insurance benefits only pay an average of about $325 each week nation-wide, which puts the nation’s 10 million unemployment collectors on a pretty strict budget. That $1300 per month in unemployment checks barely pay the electricity, propane, TV, phone, internet, property taxes, water, sewer, and garbage — and that’s if you’re collecting SNAP to pay for your food and if you were canny enough to purchase unemployment mortgage protection insurance to cover your house payments until you can get a new job.\r\n\r\nOf course, that leaves out a laundry list of other potential expenses, most of which unemployed people have already done away with — including, in most cases, insurance. Auto liability insurance is mandatory in most states, so most have that. But renter’s/home insurance, fire insurance, extended warranty coverage on a car, and particularly health insurance for the unemployed are luxuries that they just can’t afford on the income that unemployment insurance benefits provide.
