This appears to be the easiest way to create vertical text (that isn't rotated) with CSS.

  1. <!DOCTYPE html>
  2. <html>
  3. <head>
  4. <meta charset=utf-8 />
  5. <title>JS Bin</title>
  6.
  7. <style>
  8. h1 {
  9. width: 1em;
  10. font-size: 40px;
  11. letter-spacing: 40px; /* arbitrary large letter-spacing for safety */
  12. }
  13. </style>
  14. </head>
  15. <body>
  16. <h1> N e t t u t s </h1>
  17. </body>
  18. </html>

You could also consider white-space: pre as an option too! See Method 7 in the link above.
