Web developers targetting HTML5 on iDevices would really benefit from having Web Developer Tools or Firebug on Mobile Safari. Enter Firebug Lite! However, iPads, iPhones and bookmarklets don’t go well together, so I put together this little howto. 1. Surf to this page on your iPad or iPhone and bookmark it 2. Rename the bookmark to “Firebug”. As you can see, the URL is uneditable right now 3. Select and copy the javascript snippet 4. Edit the Firebug bookmarklet, remove the URL and paste the bookmarklet 5. Choose “Done” (on the virtual keyboard) and you’re all set 6. Firebug on your iPad or iPhone

Run in the FireBug console, and copy the output. An odd class is included for row striping, and the number of items can be controlled via the for loop.

Just include this script on the site and you’ll get a Firebug console that pops up for debugging in any browser. Not quite as full featured but it’s still pretty helpful! Remember to remove it when you are done.

This is my first encounter with FirePHP, I might be using this more often. FirePHP lets you output log lines like console.log would in FireBug. You will need the FirePhp plug-in for Firefox and you will have to upload the FirePHP lib to your server.

A way to time how long it takes to get through a certain block of code. Good way to measure performance on the page. You could also use the built in logging functions in firebug. Not sure how they would tally up in a test.

This comes in handy when working in big objects and you need to see what's happening on the inside of an instance. I aliased 'console.log' to 'put' and wrapped it in a try/catch block that throws alerts if no console is available. Less typing - and mildly rubyish. I got the logAllMembers bit from a mailing list archived message - forget the author but props to them. Only alteration I made was to skip null members in the output.
